Workshops

The following workshops are being planned for the GLEON 2025 Meeting. More detail will be posted here as it is available, so check back soon:

Sunday morning, 16 February 2025, 08:30 - 12:00

  • Building and Running an Aquatic Ecosystem Model Ensemble in R by Tadhg Moore, Deniz Özkundakci, and Whitney Woelmer - This workshop will guide participants through the process of setting up and running an aquatic ecosystem model ensemble in R, covering data requirements, handling missing data, and implementing one-dimensional lake models. Participants will gain hands-on experience with model setup, execution, and customization for new lakes, using R-based coding.
  • Ecosystem Restoration Design Challenge by Isten Tamba - Participants will learn about, develop, and discuss ecosystem restoration solutions using Lake Toba as a case study. Following a presentation about the region, participants will use a multi-disciplinary approach to design restoration plans using nature-based solutions that take into account the many key stakeholders in the region.

Sunday afternoon, 16 February 2025, 13:30 - 16:30

  • Digital twin of aquatic ecosystem and its needs for FAIR data/model by Qing Zhan and Lisette de Senerpont Domis - It is crucial to understand and predict how aquatic ecosystems are impacted by changes in environmental conditions, and external pressures. The urgency of this challenge is high given the unprecedented rate of global change in climate and increases in anthropogenic pressures. Developing high-quality scenarios requires seamless integration of long-term environmental and ecological data with models, that are made FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable). This can be facilitated by adopting the “digital twins” approach, meaning replicating a living or non-living physical entity such as an aquatic ecosystem. This can be realized in a user-friendly and secure way using digital research lab, which is a cloud-based modelling and simulating platform. In this workshop, participants will interact with a digital research infrastructure in its making (LTER-LIFE), by constructing a simple workflow that integrates FAIR data with an open-access lake ecosystem model (PCLake+ in the plan). Don’t panic, the hands-on exercise will be prepared in such a user-friendly way that you won’t experience a tough time in playing with it. The goal is to let the participants get a more tangible feeling in terms of how their research activities may be changed/facilitated by these emerging computing techniques. Discussion will follow on, for instance, FAIR data/model, what are necessary characteristics for a digital twin.
  • Community Engagement for Sustainable Lake Management by Isten Tamba - This hands-on workshop will involve group discussions about stakeholder engagement and governance/institutional issues facing Lake Toba. Participants will identify the roles of key stakeholders in the region and develop strategies to balance economic activities with lake conservation.

Excursion

Our local host team is planning a day-long excursion to nearby sites of interest around Lake Toba followed by farewell dinner.
