Insights into Forest Ecology from Drone Remote Sensing

Speaker: Dr. KC Cushman, NASA Jet Propulsion Lab

Forests are globally important for their role in cycles of carbon, water, and nutrients. However, knowledge of forest structure and function has been limited by the availability of historical measurements and data. Traditional field methods are often time consuming, limited in spatial extent, and inaccurate for measuring large trees. Traditional remote sensing methods are often limited in spatial and/or temporal resolution, precluding the study of organismal ecological processes. This seminar will highlight how emerging methods from drone remote sensing can connect the scales of traditional field and remote sensing studies, and provide new insights into forest ecology.
