Join Cary Institute Wildlife Biologist Mike Fargione for a 2-hour Winter Tree ID Workshop. This event will begin in the classroom, with a hands-on lesson exploring how to identify trees without leaves. Then test your newfound knowledge during a guided walk on Cary’s grounds.
Wise forest stewardship requires familiarity with the woody plants that grow in your area, and the winter and early spring are great times of the year to learn tree identification. Without leaves on the trees, many other identifying characteristics are easier to see. Participants will learn to recognize common Northeast trees by their shape, bark patterns, twigs, fruits, and seeds. Attention will also be given to invasive forest pests that threaten our trees.
The use of simple identification keys and smartphone apps will be demonstrated, and common botanical terms explained. There will be ample time for Q&A.
Wear boots and appropriate clothing.
The program is free and open to all and will take place on Cary's Millbrook, New York campus. Walk-in attendees will not be accepted as space is limited and registration is required.
