On September 29 from 10am to noon, join Cary Institute scientist Jane Lucas for a public program focused on soil ecology and health. This in-person event will be hosted on our grounds. It will begin with a brief soil 101 presentation, followed by a hands-on exploration of a soil horizon pit, and a guided walk near Wappinger Creek. Explore how soil forms, the importance of soil life, the history of soil in the Hudson Valley, current threats to our soils, and how we can be good soil stewards. The program will conclude with a visit to Lucas' Stressed Out Soils field site, where she is investigating how climate warming, drought, bactericides, and fungicides influence soil health and productivity, with the goal of guiding management.

Registration required. Participants should dress for the weather and wear footwear appropriate for a short hike (~ 1 mile) along uneven terrain.
