Target grades: K-12
Subject areas: Science teachers
Join educators from Cary Institute of Ecosystem Science and Dutchess County BOCES for a one-day workshop to explore the ecology of urban places. We'll get outdoors to examine the ecology all around us, even in cities! Participants will explore protocols that will equip them to support students in designing and carrying out their own investigation to answer questions about how climate change impacts residents (human and non-human) of urban landscapes and to explore the biodiversity of urban spaces.
We'll experience elements of project based learning that teachers can bring back to the classroom to get students thinking about local issues in engaging ways. We will discuss ideas for modifying workshop materials for all grade levels and science disciplines and invite all interested K-12 science educators to join!
This workshop is free for members of the Center for Sustainability and Climate Education.
All participants will know and be able to:
- Engage with experts in urban ecology and how scientists are investigating issues in urban places.
- Learn protocols to engage students in designing their own investigations into the impact of climate change on urban spaces.
- Learn the essential elements of project based instruction.
- Make plans to incorporate new instructional methods or content into your classroom.
