Notes and changes since last report
- After morning rain, it was around 75°, partly cloudy with light winds at 2:30 PM on May 30, 2012.
- It wasn't very sunny, but it was bright; it should have been a better day for butterflies.
The Trails
- Behind the Carriage House, beauty-bush and strawberry-shrub were blooming.
- A freshly emerged hobomok skipper was my first of the season along the Scotch Pine Alleé.
- In the Fern Glen, the other mystery plant was blooming.
- The mystery of separating white baneberry from red was lifting as white's flower stems thickened.
- Vancouveria was quietly blooming behind the limestone cobble.
- I had my elbows in an unusual moss to get that photo.
- The poor fen has continued to live up to its name this season: pitcher plants and sheep laurel were both sparse.
- Along the edge of the pond, larger blue flag was also present in its less usual pale form.
- A possible definition of obscure is honewort. It takes an effort to photograph its minute flowers.
- Out on the Wappinger Creek Trail, 10 mallards were almost oblivious to me.
